The Higher Law: How the Law of Life Sets You Free

The past 3 topics of my daily devotional, the Rhaposody of Realities, have opened my eyes in ways I have not really thought about and because of that, I have spent a significant portion of today contemplating the invisible forces that govern our existence. In the physical world, we understand that we are subject to certain immutable laws; the law of gravity, for instance, ensures that what goes up must come down. It is a constant, unyielding pressure that dictates how we move and how we build. But, as I delved deeper into the scriptures and reflected on my own spiritual walk, I began to realize that the human condition is also governed by a set of spiritual laws. For many, life is a grueling struggle against a downward pull, a persistent, heavy atmosphere of failure, decay, and addiction, and worse, death. Some people call this “human nature” or “the way of the world,” but the Apostle Paul gives it a much more clinical and terrifying name: The law of sin and death.

For years, I viewed the struggle against sin and the fear of death as a personal battle of willpower. I thought that if I could only be disciplined enough, or if I could only pray fervently enough, I could overcome the gravity of my own flaws. But the weight of a law can not be defeated by mere effort; it can only be superseded by a higher law. And just as the law of aerodynamics does not “cancel” gravity but rather provides a superior set of principles that allow a massive aircraft to soar above the earth, there is a spiritual law that operates on a frequency far above the reach of corruption.

This is what I have come to know as the Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus. Understanding this is not just a theological exercise for me; it is the fundamental secret to living a life that is truly free.

The Tyranny of the Lower Law

To appreciate the freedom of the higher law, we have to first be honest about the tyranny of the lower one. The law of sin and death is not a suggestion; it is a systemic reality that operates in the lives of those who are outside of Christ; it is a law of “wearing out.” We see it in the way our bodies eventually succumb to age, the way our best intentions often crumble into compromise, and the way fear acts as a silent master over our decisions.

This law dictates that the end of every road is a dead end; it suggests that corruption is the final word and that we are all merely “walking deaths,” waiting for the inevitable.

Even though I say this today because I believe I have just truly come to understand this as I read the Rhapsody of Realities, I say it clearly, and I mean it: I used to live under the constant, subtle expectation of decay; I have watched the world and saw people resigned to the idea that life is a slow decline from the moment of birth, but this mindset creates of kind of creates a culture of fear, fear of sickness, fear of lack, and ultimately, the paralyzing fear of death. When you live under the law of sin and death, your horizon is limited, and you make choices based on survival rather than dominion. You protect what you have because you believe that everything is being taken away by the passage of time, but I discovered a revolutionary truth in Romans 8:2: the law of the Spirit of life has made me free. It did not just give me a “pass” or a temporary reprieve; it relocated me into a different jurisdiction entirely.

Living in the Realm of the Spirit

The transition from the law of death to the law of life is a shift in the very “physics” of our spiritual being. When I accepted the reality of Christ’s finished work, I was not just forgiven for my past; I was infused with a new kind of life, Zoe, the very life of God. This life is not subject to the laws of this world; it is incorruptible, divine, and ageless; it operates by the law of the Spirit, which is a law of constant renewal rather than constant decay.

If we have not been doing it, working it, or walking correctly in that light, I want to urge us to begin to look at our lives through this new lens. If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in me, then that same Spirit is actively “quickening,” giving life to my mortal body. This means that our vitality is not solely dependent on our biological clock or the environment around us. There is an internal power source that is renewing our minds and energizing our bodies, or for some people, if they allow it. I am learning to consciously refuse the language of the lower law; I will no longer say, “I am getting old and weak,” or “I am succumbing to this or that.” Instead, I declare that the law of life is working in every fiber of my being. Just as a pilot trusts the law of lift to carry them across the ocean, I am learning to trust the law of life to carry me through the pressures of this world.

This higher law changes how I handle failure and sin. Under the old law, sin led to death, a cycle of guilt and spiritual distance, but under the higher law, I am “made free.” This does not mean I am perfect, but it means that sin no longer has legal jurisdiction over my soul. When I stumble, I do not fall back into the pit of condemnation; I stand up in the grace of the higher law, knowing that my identity is fixed in the life of Christ. The “gravity” of my mistakes can not pull me down when I am soaring on the “lift” of His righteousness.

The Dominion Over the Fear of Death

I believe the most liberating aspect of this higher law is the total abolition of the fear of death. For most of humanity, death is the great unknown, the ultimate enemy that renders all achievements meaningless. But the gospel tells us that Jesus did not just come to comfort us in our death; He came to destroy the one who had the power of death. He abolished death and brought life and immortality to light.

I have been meditating on this truth since today, and we should continue to do so until it becomes a part of the very core of our realities. If death has been abolished, then it has no sting and no victory over me. I have already passed from death unto life, and this realization removes the bondage that Hebrews speaks of, the lifelong slavery to the fear of the end.

When you are no longer afraid to die, you are finally free to live. You can take risks for the sake of the Gospel, you can love without reservation, and you can build for eternity because you know that your life is hidden in a Source that can never be extinguished.

I look at the early apostles, and I see men who were completely unimpressed by the threat of death. They did not see themselves as victims of a wearing-out process; they understood that their departure from this world was a choice and a transition, not a defeat. They lived with a “transcendent life.” This is the standard I am reaching for in my own journey, and I am refusing to live in the “death zone,” where fear and decay are expected guests. I am a citizen of the “life zone,” where health, victory, and dominion are the natural order of things.

Conclusion

Living by the law of life is a daily practice of moral and spiritual vigilance. It requires us to wake our conscience to the reality that we are no longer slaves. The world will try to pull us back down into the bad space of its expectations. It will try to convince us that we are subject to its diseases, its economies, and its inevitable declines, but my dearest Christian readers, we have found a higher law. We have found a law that says we are being renewed day by day, even if the outward man, the body, is aging.

The Law of the Spirit of Life is our shield against the Lucifer Effect########### of the world’s systems, an article I wrote some days ago. It reminds me that I am not just a “cog” in a dying machine; I am a living branch in a Vine that is eternal. This is the essence of what I want my blog, Value Faith, to be about. Faith that recognizes its own worth because it is fueled by the very life of the Creator, and as I move forward, I am committed to speaking the language of life, thinking the thoughts of life, and expecting the outcomes of life.

And, so again, my dearest readers, I invite you to stop struggling against the gravity of your past and the fear of your future. You were not designed to wear out or to live in bondage to corruption. There is a higher law available to you right now; it is a law that propels you in the path of righteousness and glory. So step into the world of the Spirit, trust the principles of the Gospel, and watch as the law of life carries you into a freedom you never thought possible. And let our lives forever continue to shout and sing: Glory to God, for we are free indeed!
